This video slideshow has been around for about six years now, and there are some versions newer than this one. Nancy Gill was the first one to show me an early version of this.
Every Sunday, we eat lunch with my wife's family. The globalization of our economy and the school system's role in preparing our children to have the most choices in it was the topic at the lunch table (which was slightly more enjoyable than the political topics). During the course of the meal, several questions were lobbed around the table:
- If the world is rapidly shifting and adapting and innovating in the way it does business, is education keeping up with the changes? Can it? Should it?
- Does it have to change if content doesn't change? Does the content change? Should it?
- Are we teaching children the kinds of skills that actually apply to real life?
- How can schools prepare children for careers that haven't been invented yet?
Across career fields and across centuries certain constants have always been required of people that excel: curiosity, imagination, creativity, innovative thinking, initiative, adaptability, critical thinking, analytical thinking, the ability to communicate effectively, the ability to collaborate.
The capacity to think.
